Travelling Article - 24 Hours in Manchester

To kick off 2012, Travelling Actuary Eve Hartridge takes us on a whistle-stop tour of one of the UK's best loved cities, Manchester.

Manchester is probably the only UK city to have a 'scene' and has been instrumental in defining our culture of recent years. The music, fashion and sporting clubs are world famous; I certainly recall in the early 1990s Manchester was top of everyone's UCAS form. Having worked in recruitment for so long that I barely remember revision afternoons listening to 'The Stone Roses'; the one thing I've discovered is that once in Manchester people certainly don't seem keen to leave! So, purely for career research purposes I paid Manchester a visit to see what all the fuss was about.

Manchester was at the forefront of the industrial revolution and has superb transport links, it is so easy to get to or around Manchester it's almost rude not to! Just over 2 hours from London it's a perfect location for a weekend break and easily accessible for surrounding areas such as The Peak District. The best way to explore Manchester is by tram, The Manchester Metro Link which has almost 100 stops throughout the city so you can save your feet while experiencing 'The Scene'

 Favourite Landmarks

Manchester Town Hall - based on Albert Street is a stunning example of Neo- Gothic architecture. You can't miss it and I believe guided tours are now on offer.
The Printworks- The former office of the late Robert Maxwell (and I guess home of the pensions review) was destroyed in 1996 and redeveloped to become the UK's leading Urban Entertainment and leisure complex housing restaurants and an IMAX cinema .www.theprintworks.com
The Triangle - The former Corn Exchange restored in 2000 and now apparently houses the world's largest Mark's and Spencer. www.thetriangle.co.uk

 Favourite Museums

The Manchester Museum (part of the university of Manchester)- always something new to see and learn http://www.museum.manchester.ac.uk/aboutus/
National Football Museum - home to the most famous club in the world and arguably the best team in the premiership http://www.nationalfootballmuseum.com/
The Museum of Transport - from the industrial revolution to the modern day http://www.gmts.co.uk/

 Favourite Eateries

The French at The Midland Hotel, I believe the first Michelin Star restaurant in the UK and arguably the best in town http://www.the-french.co.uk/hotel.html
Room - based on King's street in the centre of town, delicious for dinner or a post shopping cocktail www.roomrestaurants.com
Second Floor Restaurant at Harvey Nicholls - fine dining and great views of the Cathedral and Printworks www.harveynichols.com very popular so booking is advisable

 Favourite Hotel

The Lowry- a favourite with the 'A' list is a cool contempory hotel with an excellent spa and restaurant run by top chef Anthony Bourdain. Neutral colours and chic styling create an ambience of calm relaxation. Centrally located and just 10 miles away from Manchester airport it is the perfect choice when visiting the city. www.thelowryhotel.com
