Travelling Article - 48 Hours in La Plagne

La Plagne, as the name suggests, is located in The French Alps with the closest airports of Chambery and Geneva being a slightly tedious 1.5 hours and 2.5 hours drive respectively. This long transfer time is worth it as once you reach the resort you will not be disappointed.

La Plagne is at high altitude so those with altitude sickness should take note. At the highest point you are 3250m above sea level and 1250m in the village of Montchavin. The scenery is stunning, the pistes are wide and long and the views from the glacier near to the Bellecote's North Face are breathtaking. Just be sure to wrap up warm all season. La Plagne itself is very accessible with modern cable cars and gondolas, the Vanoise Express is one of the most recent additions and is a fast way to travel from La Plagne to Les Arcs.

La Plagne has 225km of slopes offering a good selection of runs for all skiing levels. There are 15 black runs and 30 reds, that said, La Plagne has some of the hardest reds that I've ever skied and quite early on I opted to stick to one of the 72 blue runs which are far more suitable for those looking to less of an Alpine work out. The Blue runs also have the best bars and restaurants, from my extensive research. The 1992 Winter Olympics were held at nearby Albertville with the bobsleigh and luge tracks in La Plagne, these are well worth a look for no other reason that to realise how terrifying these sports are, before returning for a leisurely gluhwein or hot chocolate. If you would like to try your hand at other alpine sports, these can be arranged locally or via the hotel concierge. The company Oxygene comes highly recommended for a Bobsleigh experience and Skidoo riding.

The place to stay is the Club Med complex at La Plagne 2100, a fantastic recently renovated hotel where you are able to ski to the door. Club Med really do take the stress out of organising a holiday as their resorts are all inclusive, all you need to do is turn up, collect your kit and enjoy yourself. Club Med offer a variety of rooms and suites, all with a contemporary luxury finish, La Plagne 2100 is also extremely accommodating to families and those traveling with small children and has a large selection of family rooms. One nursery slope is located at the end of the hotel sun-deck, so perfectly placed to keep an eye on younger members of the family. Food is varied and plentiful, all drinks are included including local and non branded alcohol. The hotel also boasts an extensive gym with weights room, sauna and relaxing Turkish Bath- a perfect way to un-wind after an adventure on the slopes.
