Lifestyle Article - Aon makes two senior hires into its private client division

Aon has made two senior appointments in its private client division, with Nick Gavin-Powell joining as Head of Private Clients, and James McDowell taking up the role of Head of Fine Art.

Nick joins Aon from Howden Group where he spent seven years in several senior roles, most latterly as Divisional Director for its private office business.

Prior to joining Howden, Nick held management and broking roles for both NFU Mutual and A-Plan Insurance, and he brings over 17 years of Private Client experience. His new role will see him assume overall responsibility for Aon’s private client business.

James joins Aon following 16 years with AXA Art Insurance, where he was a Senior Fine Art Underwriter. He specialised in the insurance of high net worth clients, corporate art collections, fine art dealers and independent, local authority and university museums.

After graduating with a Master’s Degree in History of Art, James worked as a picture specialist both for Bonham’s and Christie’s auctioneers in his early career. His art specialism is modern British, Scottish and Irish art spanning the period 1890 to 1950. In his new role he is responsible for the development and growth of Aon’s fine art client portfolio.

Aon Private Clients arranges insurance for high net worth individuals, organising cover for everything from high value homes, contents and valuables to individual works of art, prestige cars and boats. It also arranges cover for country houses, estates and farms.

Commenting on his new role, Nick Gavin-Powell said: “I was attracted to the role both because of the strong Aon brand and its vision to offer a joined-up approach across its various business units both in the UK and internationally. I am very much looking forward to growing the Private Client business by developing and communicating our unique proposition to this market, and to becoming part of Aon’s global success story.”

James McDowell said: “I am excited about the opportunity to establish Aon as the go-to fine art broker in this vibrant marketplace, and about using my skills and experience for the benefit of our growing client base. I am also looking forward to sharing my passion for the art world with clients and colleagues across the business.”

Martyn Denney, Managing Director of Aon Affinity, said: “Both Nick and James bring a wealth of private client and art insurance experience to the business. They bring industry-leading expertise and passion for their relevant areas, and I am confident that they will play a significant role in the continued success of our private client division.”
