General Insurance Article - Breakdown companies charge members to recover after accident

Believe it or not, even if you have all singing, all dancing breakdown cover with one of the big 3 providers (AA, RAC & Green Flag), they will charge you to recover your vehicle home or to a garage after an accident because it is not a “breakdown”. Such terms seem to appear in the majority of breakdown policy terms and conditions

“Typical fees charged by the major breakdown services to their members are around £180 to recover a vehicle after an accident” says Lee Jones of York based Free Motor Legal, the free alternative to motor legal protection. “Many people would be surprised to hear that getting you home after an accident is not part of what is included with your breakdown policy.”

Lee went on to explain “As a competitor and a disruptor to the motor legal expenses insurance market, we often benchmark what service we are able to provide compared to what the insurance industry are offering. We were surprised to see that virtually all of the breakdown companies want to charge their members to recover their vehicle after a road accident.”

Part of the benefits of membership to Free Motor Legal include free roadside recovery after a road accident if your vehicle is immobilised or the driver is injured and unable to drive. This is not a replacement to actual breakdown cover, but the free membership site does plug a rather large and expensive gap left by the breakdown companies.

The company was set up to provide motorists in England, Scotland & Wales with a free alternative to paying an extra £30 annually for motor legal protection, but in doing so realised it was important to be able to help people from the very start after an accident and give them a reason not to need to call their insurers, which could lead to a need to pay an excess. The company therefore provides not only free lifetime membership and free legal assistance after a non-fault collision, but also gets their members home without charge after a collision, regardless of fault.

The savings to Britain’s 30 million motorists are staggering. A typical legal expenses policy usually costs £30. So the potential here is to save Britain up to £900 Million each year by providing a free alternative to paying for motor legal protection.

Free membership is open to any motorist in England, Scotland and Wales by visiting the website at www.freemotorlegal.co.uk
