Lifestyle Article - First CEO appointed for the Society of Pension Professionals

The Society of Pension Professionals (SPP), the representative body for the wide range of providers of advice and services to work-based pension schemes and to their sponsors, is pleased to announce Fred Emden as its new Chief Executive Officer, a new role that has been created this year. Fred joins the SPP on 2 March 2020.

Prior to joining, Fred spent over eight years as Deputy CEO of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RCOG). Before joining the RCOG, he was Deputy Chief Executive of the Scottish Ballet.

Fred will work with the President and the Council to formulate and regularly review the Society's strategic priorities and objectives to ensure that appropriate mechanisms are in place to deliver value to members, including planning and delivery of member events and other benefits. He will be responsible for leading the organisation as well as acting as one of the key spokespeople and representatives for the Society both at member events and with external engagements.

The Society’s primary purpose is to provide services for its members, both as firms and as individuals. The services are wide-ranging and include access to industry knowledge, contact with the Society’s specialist sub-committees to consult on technical issues, roundtables, evening meetings, engagement with policymakers and regulators, and the annual conference. The new CEO will play a pivotal role in all of these activities.

Paul McGlone, President of the Society of Pension Professionals said: “I’m delighted to have Fred joining us at such a critical juncture for both the SPP and the pensions industry. For the Society this is our first CEO, and the recent changes we’ve made to our structure mean that we’re better placed than ever to deliver more value to more of our members.

“When I took on the role of President in 2018, my goal was to expand what the SPP does, deliver more value to our members in more ways, and to modernise how we deliver those services. Fred’s appointment is a key part of this. With numerous pension initiatives having been delayed due to Brexit, 2020 looks set to be an extremely busy year for pensions. Our proactive engagement with the pensions industry will seek to help our members help their clients, and ultimately pension savers.”

Fred Emden, CEO of the Society of Pension Professionals said: “I am hugely excited to be joining the SPP at such an interesting point for the industry. I hope to build on all of the great work performed by the Society to date, focussing on delivering real value to the membership and to the industry as a whole. I am keen to develop how key information is collated and accessed and I greatly look forward to meeting our varied stakeholders, to hear their views and priorities.”
