Total overall economic losses caused by Hurricane Matthew are estimated to be as high as USD15 billion, with insured losses estimated at around USD4.5 billion. The vast majority of these losses were incurred in the United States where economic losses exceeded USD10 billion. The private insurance industry and the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) paid out nearly USD4.0 billion in claims. Haiti (USD2.8 billion), the Bahamas (USD600 million to 1.0 billion), Canada (USD150 million), and Cuba (at least USD100 million) also sustained heavy economic damage from the cyclone. At a minimum of USD400 million, Matthew became the costliest event ever recorded for the Bahamian insurance industry.
