John joined Hymans Robertson in 2003. Since then he has had various leadership responsibilities within the business, including Head of Investment Consultancy to March 2014 and, more recently, Chair of the Board. He is a fellow of the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries with over 25 years’ experience focusing largely on investment strategy and risk management, spanning both the life and pensions industries. When he joined Hymans Robertson he pioneered some of the earliest LDI solutions for pensions, before taking on the leadership of the investment practice.
After 15 years in the role, Ronnie, who has been with the firm since 1980, will continue with his client responsibilities, maintaining relationships with several of Hymans Robertson’s major clients. He will also continue to offer his services as a respected expert witness and retain his other external chairmanship roles.
Commenting on Ronnie Bowie’s time at the helm in Hymans Robertson, John Dickson said: “Ronnie’s incredible commitment and dedication to our firm has played a huge role getting us to where we are today. For almost 40 years he has been, and will continue to be, a universally respected leading figure both within our business and the wider industry.
Over that time our markets have changed dramatically and have become vastly more complex. Ronnie has continually adapted to, and led us through, much of that change.
“Looking ahead there are challenges for our clients, for pension scheme members, our industry and broader society, driven to some degree by the headwinds of demographic and political change. We’ve been steadfastly independent for almost 100 years, as well as steadfastly committed to our values. Our independence means we can look ahead and invest in developing ideas and solutions that will help our clients not only today, but anticipating what they will want and need in the future, always investing for the long-term.
“I’m excited about the next 100 years for our business, and look forward to seeing our people and our services develop, while holding true to our values, as we strive to create better futures for our clients, their members and our industry.”
Commenting, Ronnie Bowie added: “It has been an honour to be the Senior Partner at Hymans Robertson, and to watch our business and the people within it grow. There is much we are proud of, but it’s our focus on people – both our own and our clients’, of which we’re most proud. Consistently meeting clients’ needs and staying true to our values has underpinned our success and we pride ourselves in forming long-standing relationships. Our first private sector client appointed us in 1947 and they’re still with us today.
“Our business has diversified significantly in recent years, and in every area of our business we’ve changed the way the market operates for the better. In the Local Government Pension Scheme (LGPS), we’ve maintained our market leading position by spearheading innovation and leading the way in supporting and guiding the LGPS through periods of change.
In private sector DB, we were the first to introduce the concept of Integrated Risk Management over a decade ago and more recently led the industry in helping schemes manage cashflow risks. Our clients are also the first to benefit from truly on-demand valuations, delivering real-time member-by-member analysis based on a live administration database. In DC we created a new category of focussing on member outcomes through our Guided Outcomes (GO™) savings platform - the first digital solution in the market to help people save the right amount to reach any goal. We also launched
Club Vita in 2008, which redefined the approach to analysing longevity trends underpinning our DB consulting, risk transfer and our fast-growing life and financial services consulting businesses.
“Listening intently to our clients to understand their needs and objectives, and striving to help them achieve them, embeds a creative process of continuous improvement in our consulting approach. That’s why we’ll continue to change the way our markets operate, making a real difference to the lives of members of pension schemes and savers more broadly.
“John has been intimately involved in developing our firm’s strategy over a number of years in his various roles on our Board. He has had a key role to play in our success. It is a source of great pleasure and pride for me to be able to hand over the reins of Senior Partner to him with the firm in such great shape - with so many people across the firm doing great work for our clients and for our communities. I have every confidence that John will take us to the next level.”
