General Insurance Article - Leading underwriters join AEGIS London

Two leading market underwriters are to join AEGIS London on 8 November to write a book of short-tail marine business, the company has announced.

Simon Cooper and Richard Young, both formerly with Atrium, are to focus on specific niche areas within the hull market for AEGIS London. The move is part of the strategy AEGIS London has been following for the last three years to diversify its portfolio of risks.

Cooper and Young will become Head of Marine and Head of Hull, respectively.

Simon Cooper was Atrium’s Chief Operating Officer for its Lloyd’s syndicates, having been at the company since 1982. Beginning his career as an underwriting assistant, he graduated to the role of marine underwriter in 1997, becoming COO in 2006. Cooper will report to AEGIS London’s Active Underwriter, David Croom-Johnson.

Richard Young was most recently Atrium’s Principal Officer in Singapore. Having first joined General Accident in 1990, he spent two years as a graduate trainee with Methuen Underwriting before moving to Atrium where he rose to marine underwriter by 2003. Based in Singapore since 2009, Young is relocating to London and will report to Simon Cooper.

David Croom-Johnson commented: “Simon and Richard’s arrival is quite a coup for AEGIS London. We are delighted that these two highly respected market figures have chosen to join our team, bringing with them a wealth of experience in the marine classes. Their arrival signals a further step in AEGIS London’s development as a diversified business and we hope it will encourage other underwriters to take a look at AEGIS London and what we can offer.”

AEGIS London already writes a broad marine portfolio including Protection & Indemnity, marine liabilities, cargo, specie and offshore energy.
