Four young insurance professionals have been hailed as the winners of this year’s LMA Lloyd’s Market Academy Apprenticeship Programme.
Four teams competed to prepare syndicate business plans and have them judged by a Dragons' Den-style panel of judges formed of Tom Bolt, Lloyd's Director of Performance Management; Barbara Merry, CEO of Hardy Underwriting Group and Terry Hayday, Head of Professional Standards at the Lloyd's Market Association (LMA). Each team comprised up to five individuals who are developing their professional careers across a range of managing agents in the Lloyd's market.
The winning team was Melanie Sears (QBE), Gemma Russell (Amlin), Henry O’Kill (Beazley) and Russell Sharrad (Catlin), all of whom competed under the name of Nelson Syndicate.
The competition represents the concluding part of the LMA Lloyd's Market Academy’s second apprenticeship programme, which has been developed in conjunction with the Corporation of Lloyd's. Nineteen young professionals took part in this eight-module programme and demonstrated their learning by preparing business plans entirely of their own choosing: naming their syndicates, devising their logos and deciding on their portfolios of business
Terry Hayday, the LMA’s Head of Professional Standards and a judge, commented: "This programme is rapidly becoming a must for managing agents. Not only does it introduce young participants to some very senior Lloyd’s figures, it also reinforces the networking relationships that are at the heart of the subscription market.
“Demand to participate is very high so we’re now planning two further programmes in 2012 to help develop the next generation of Lloyd's talent."
Ben Baker, Manager of Professional Standards at the LMA and the initiative’s main coordinator, added:
“The Lloyd’s market attracts highly competent young people who have the potential to become market leaders. The apprenticeship programme is one way of ensuring that these entrants gain a holistic view of how to manage a syndicate and understand what being part of a successful business entails.”
