His Royal Highness, The Prince of Wales will deliver the keynote address during the United Nations Financial & Private Sector Disaster Resilience Global Summit, which will be held on June 25th in conjunction with the IIS (International Insurance Society) 50th Annual Seminar at the Park Plaza Westminster Bridge Hotel in London, June 22nd – 25th. The Summit is cohosted by the IIS, Willis Group and the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction.
In response to the increasing severity and frequency of catastrophes, the United Nations developed the Hyogo Framework for Action (HFA) to improve global disaster resilience, integrating disaster reduction into policy. The insurance industry is a crucial stakeholder in this initiative, which dovetails with the very purpose of the industry – protecting and ensuring economic and societal security. The Prince of Wales, who is a long time and active proponent of an inclusive, sustainable and resilient society, will address a delegation of industry leaders, recognizing the significant role that the private sector has to play in improving disaster resilience.
“The compelling address by His Royal Highness at today's Summit shows how next year's Hyogo Framework will enable finance, insurance and wider business sectors to prioritize the necessary resilience to natural disasters and increasing climate risk and save millions in lives, livelihoods and assets in the decades ahead.” says Rowan Douglas, CEO, Capital, Science & Policy Practice, Willis Group, and Chairman Willis Research Network.
“We are deeply honored that His Royal Highness, The Prince of Wales, a man who has a deep concern about the impact of natural disasters on the loss of lives and property, and a keen understanding of the positive role the insurance industry plays in mitigating these losses, will address our delegation of distinguished insurance leaders from around the world, representing all sectors of the industry,” says Michael J. Morrissey, IIS President and CEO.
His Royal Highness will be joined by other leading figures from International organizations including John Nelson of Lloyd’s, Dr. Gordon McBean of the International Council for Science and Dr. Madelyn Antoncic, Treasurer of the World Bank. The Summit includes a body of experts representing the fields of science and business as well as policy makers, providing insights on disaster resilience from a variety of perspectives. Presenters include high level representatives from the UN, OECD, the IAIS, the World Economic Forum, the Bank of England, the University of Cambridge and other prestigious universities and research organizations, as well as prominent insurance executives.
