The Pensions Regulator has announced the permanent appointment of Fred Berry as lead investment consultant.

Mr Berry joins the regulator most recently from Mercer where he was a principal in the investments business. He has more than 20 years’ experience in the pensions and investment industry and will be supporting the regulator’s activities across defined benefit (DB) and defined contribution (DC) pension schemes.

Mr Berry took up the position on 1 September 2014. He is the first person to hold the post.

Commenting on his new role, Fred Berry said:

“I am looking forward to working with my new colleagues in the regulation of UK workplace pensions, and in raising the profile of the regulator in the investment industry.”

Welcoming the appointment, the regulator’s interim chief executive Stephen Soper said:

“This appointment marks our intention to significantly deepen our expertise in the sphere of investment, both for DB and DC schemes.

“We’re pleased that Fred has joined us, bringing with him a wealth of investment and pensions knowledge and experience. He will be recruiting other investment specialists to support him, who together will complement the existing teams we have."
