Even the most careful homeowners cannot predict some of the more bizarre accidents in life according to the latest data from RIAS. The specialist insurance provider has poured through thousands of home insurance claims from the past year and found some of the weird and unfortunate accidents that have resulted in sometimes significant damage.

  1.   An overly enthusiastic dog in Slough decided he fancied a swim and naturally decided to dive in after seeing some crystal clear ocean water. The water was unfortunately on the TV screen in the living room rather than on the beach and the dog’s leap led to over £250 worth of damage and one very embarrassed mutt
  2.
  3.   A Rochester man was brushing his teeth when a wasp flew through the window. In a panicked attempt to shoo it away he inadvertently caused over £1000 worth of damage when he knocked over a glass that cracked the basin
  4.
  5.   An owner of a curious cat in Milton Keynes got more than they bargained for when leaving a cup of coffee by their laptop. The moggy’s investigation led to one soaked keyboard, £470 worth of damage and a cat in the doghouse
  6.
  7.   Gentle sibling rivalry escalated into all out warfare at a house in Motherwell when a brother took off his shoe and threw it at his sister. The result wasn’t quite what he was hoping for however as he missed his target and instead hit the TV screen causing £667 worth of damage
  8.
  9.   A July evening in Northampton saw a real life game of Angry Birds unfold when a pigeon catapulted a vase from a bathroom windowsill into a toilet scoring £193 worth of points for a cracked toilet bowl
  10.
  11.   Any dog owner will know the chaos that can come from the noise of the doorbell. One Carlisle man knows only too well after being caught unawares with a cup of tea and a computer on his lap. His overexcited canine companion saw his laptop as the perfect springboard, smashing it as he leapt out of the room causing over £470 worth of damage
  12.
  13.   Two battling cats chose a Norwich living room as their arena and the fallout was a broken TV and £380 worth of damage
  14.
  15.   An Enfield man, in a moment of Heston Blumenthal-esque inspiration attempted to barbeque an entire goose. Instead of turning out crisp and delicious it somehow melted the barbeque completely causing over £1300 worth of damage
  16.
  17.   A Belfast resident incurred the wrath of his pet bearded dragon after receiving a nasty bite whilst cleaning its tank. The bite caused the man to jump backwards into his TV causing nearly £400 worth of damage
  18.
  19.   A disagreement between two magpies in Kilmarnock resulted in over £400 worth of damage to a conservatory when their battle caused them to crash through it

Peter Corfield, Managing Director at RIAS says:

“Not every claim we receive is straight forward and it is interesting to see what unusual scenarios cropped up in the last year with animals often proving to be the chief culprits. It seems that pretty much anything can happen to cause catastrophe in the home and the best way to deal with it is to make sure you have the right level of protection against the unexpected.”
