Last year 10.4% of the speeding convictions that were reported to Admiral were clocked up in June.
Admiral also analysed the driving behaviour of motorists with Admiral LittleBox telematics policies in 2017 and found:
Summer drivers drive over the speed limit 21.4% more on motorways, and 14.8% more on non-motorways, than winter drivers
More incidents of hard braking per mile detected during summer – an indication of driving at an excessive rate, or without enough attention
Motorists drive an average of 17.4% more miles over the summer months compared to the equivalent winter period
The daily mileage of drivers between 6pm and 9pm increases by 9.6% when compared with the same hours in winter months
Along with increasing the chance of speeding tickets, Admiral’s own claims data shows motorists are involved in more accidents with pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists in the summer months
Sabine Williams, Admiral Head of Motor Products, said, “Our research shows that a lot of motorists are travelling further distances over summer but with much less caution than in the winter months. Many drivers enjoy the start of the summer months, making the most of longer evenings and sunny weather to get out more often. They might be tempted to go a little faster on the motorways when the weather starts to improve as well. It’s easy to cover lots of miles when you are visiting the beach, going to festivals, or away on holiday over summer, but don’t relax too much.
“It’s obviously very dangerous to drive without due care and attention, or above the speed limit, whatever the weather or season. But putting your foot down could ‘drive up’ costs on your insurance because adding speeding convictions to your licence will increase your premiums as well.”
