Standard Life has today announced the appointment of Paul Matthews as Chief Executive of its UK business.
In addition to his responsibilities as Group Chief Executive, David Nish has been performing the duties of UK Chief Executive since January 2010. Paul's appointment will allow David to focus on the Group strategy and shaping the future direction of the businesses across the Group.
As UK Chief Executive, Paul's responsibilities will include UK Operations; Customer Services, UK IT and Change,
Paul has held a number of senior positions within Standard Life since he joined in 1989. Most recently, he was UK Take to Market Director* with responsibility for the Retail, Corporate and Direct to Customer businesses in the UK.
David Nish, Group Chief Executive, said,

Paul Matthews - Biography
Paul was born in Bexleyheath in 1960. He was educated at Hurstmere School in Sidcup, Kent.
Paul enjoyed a successful career in rugby during his teens and early 20s, which included captaining England (U-19's) in 1979/80, before injury forced Paul to retire early. A keen follower of the sport, Paul is a life member at Blackheath rugby club.
Prior to joining Standard Life in 1989, Paul worked for 10 years at National Mutual Life in various roles in Investment and Sales.
Having achieved the number one position in the Standard Life sales force, Paul moved into management with his first role being Sales Manager in 1991 then Regional Manager in 1993. In 1999 he was appointed Head of IFA Sales, was made Director, Distribution in 2005, before being made Managing Director, UK Distribution in 2007.
Paul was appointed UK Take to Market Director in June 2010 before being appointed as UK Chief Executive in June 2011.
Paul sits on the faculty of the Chartered Insurance Institute and speaks at a number of Industry forums throughout the year.
Paul is married to Debbie, and has three children; Peter 20; Andrew 17; and Caroline 15. His interests outside work are following his children's sporting activities at weekends, playing cricket in the summer, the odd game of golf and, when possible, spending time at his house in Cornwall with family and friends walking, surfing and enjoying the odd Cornish ale.
