General Insurance Article - Summer of sport sees injury claims soar

Well over a third (35%) of UK adults have taken up new hobbies in the past 12 months, according to new research from MetLife UK. More than one in five (22%) Brits have taken up one new hobby, whilst one in eight (13%) have taken up multiple hobbies.

 • Well over a third (35%) of Brits say they have taken up new hobbies in the last 12 months
 • Gardening, swimming, and photography top the most popular new interests
 • As interest in hobbies soar, so can injury. Internal data reveals claims for fractures are up 51%. But hobbyists can enjoy their newfound interest by ensuring they have protection in place should the unexpected happen

Top hobbies people have taken up
 1. Gardening – 35%
 2. Swimming – 18%
 3. Photography – 16%
 4. Going to the gym – 15%
 5. Running – 14%
 6. Cycling / mountain biking – 12%
 7. Dance – 9%
 8. Musical Instruments – 9%
 9. Team sports – 7%
 10. Weightlifting – 7%

The research, which explores consumer views of financial protection in a COVID-19 world, found that although the pandemic has spurred people to take up new hobbies, just 7% say it has prompted them to think about income protection. Yet, without a financial protection policy in place, those who face an injury and have to take time off work, may struggle financially.

MetLife’s claims data also revealed that claims for accidents, such as fractures, has soared by 51% when comparing to pre-COVID-19 levels. A total of 634 claims have been submitted in just one month totalling more than £400,000. Almost half of the claims submitted were for children (309 vs 328 for adults).

Rich Horner, Head of Individual Protection at MetLife, comments: “COVID-19 restrictions saw many people constrained to their homes and local areas, giving them extra time on their hands. To keep themselves busy, well over a third took up a new hobby. But with this comes a degree of risk with the number of potential accidents sure to rise.

“Our data reveals some interesting trends. Claims for accidents, such as fractures, dropped significantly during the peak of the lockdowns, while claims for other illnesses – such as COVID-19 – rose significantly. But as lockdown lifted, so did the uptake in hobbies which could point to why we have now seen claims for fractures increase by 51%.

“As many enjoy their newfound interests, it’s important they consider having financial protection in place. It’s all too easy for accidents to happen at the worst moment, particularly as the UK begins to ease restrictions and individuals are set to return to normality in a matter of days. Many don’t think of the immediate impact an accident can have on finances and the family. Having a policy in place means that a more active lifestyle can be enjoyed - whether it’s gardening, football, rock climbing or going to the gym. MetLife offers the reassurance that should the unexpected happen, we will help you to keep going, allowing you to pay your way, do your bit and take care of your family.”
