In the shadow of Ben Lomond, the ‘Bonnie Banks’ of Loch Lomond is Britain’s largest expanse of fresh water and whether you walk, cycle or drive through the National Park or travel by boat, it offers some of Scotland’s most breathtaking scenery. The closest town is Balloch and a visit to the nearby Balloch Castle and the Aquarium are also recommended if making the hour drive.

 7. Charcoals

Hidden away in plain sight on Glasgow’s Renfield Street, Charcoals is easily missed by passers by but a restaurant well worth seeking out. Held in high regard by locals thanks to its great Indian food, Charcoals offers what could be some of the best curries in town. Under new management since 2011 but still providing that award winning formula that made it such a success in the first place, Charcoals maintains a clean, unpretentious interior with a cosy, comfortable and warm feel and relaxed, unhurried atmosphere helped along by friendly, efficient service. A comprehensive collection of Indian curry house favourites, Charcoals provides lovers of Asian food with almost too much choice, the specialties ranging from baltis and kormas to those sundries that make an Indian meal in to a feast.

 8. University of Glasgow

Take a student led tour of the absolutely stunning university campus that was founded more than 500 years ago.  9. A Play a Pie and a Pint

For a little over £10 you can sit down to a place that does exactly as the same suggests. Watch a play, eat a pie and drink a pint. Not many better ways to spend a lunchtime in Glasgow.

 10. Blue Dog

This has to be one of the most chilled spots in Glasgow. Blue Dog really works its laid-back jazz bar vibe, with cosy brown furnishings, 1970s-style wallpaper and a piano tucked into the corner – this is not just for show either, in fact it gets a good work-out most nights. That's what's so nice about this place: it has that rare combination of both style and substance. The crowd reflects this. Blue Dog attracts a pleasant mixture of people of all ages; some glammed up and revelling in the venue's jazzy atmosphere, others more casually attired, here for the music. The cocktails are well worth investigating too, well-executed and original. Try a smooth honey and watermelon martini, in keeping with the atmosphere, or a White-Out Frappe with Grand Marnier and espresso for a bit of a kick.
