General Insurance Article - The rise in prostate cancer figures in England

Following the release of the Cancer registration statistics from Public Health England yesterday, Simon Jacobs, Head of Underwriting and Claims at Aegon UK, comments on critical illness (CI) claims for prostate cancer.

Aegon critical illness claims for prostate cancer reflect the rise in prostate cancer figures released by Public Health England.

Prostate cancer was by far the most common cancer critical illness claim Aegon received from men in 2018, accounting for 31% of critical illness cancer claims among men.

A noticeable increase from 2017 when prostate cancer accounted for just 23% of critical illness cancer claims among men.

Simon Jacobs, Head of Underwriting and Claims at Aegon UK, said: “Men are taking a greater interest in their health and wellbeing. The national growth in awareness as a result of campaigns such as Movember and key celebrities like Stephen Fry speaking openly can really help save lives.

“More men are addressing serious health concerns early enough to be able to treat them providing a better outcome, which is fantastic.

“Early detection and better treatment for cancer means that survival rates after a diagnosis are improving. This further emphasises the importance of critical illness cover.

“Health awareness campaigns are really taking effect and giving people the information and confidence they need to identify and address men’s health issues.”

Aegon has a range of factsheets to help both customers and advisers understand more about prostate and testicular cancer, highlighting the specific underwriting considerations for these illnesses:
